Ultra-Gold™ ARC Rockers have arrived with design updates and features that take the line of rockers to a whole new level of performance
Memphis, TN − The next generation of COMP Cams® Ultra-Gold™ ARC Series Aluminum Rocker Arms have arrived. The new ARC series has design updates and new features that take the popular line of rockers to a whole new level.
The original Ultra-Gold™ Aluminum Rockers changed the way racing and high performance street engine builders approached valve train design. Now, COMP Cams® is revolutionizing valve train performance again with the next generation of Ultra-Gold™ ARC Series Aluminum Rocker Arms, featuring an Arced, Recessed, Contoured design. Using cutting edge design techniques and manufacturing processes, Ultra-Gold™ ARC Rockers increase engine power, enhance valve train stability and improve oiling while fitting under stock valve covers. Ultra-Gold™ ARC Rockers feature a new extrusion based on improvements developed through FEA analysis, resulting in an even stronger, stiffer body without compromising mass. A new arced channel and contoured top, similar to a bridge design, give the rockers the best strength-to-weight ratio possible. The body has additional CNC contouring to improve clearances for valve covers and springs. Manufactured entirely in the U.S.A., all Ultra-Gold™ ARC Series Aluminum Rocker Arms feature a spring oiler channel through the body for improved lubrication. Trunnion retaining clips have been replaced with an ultra durable spiral lock type clip, similar to what holds a piston pin in place. Stress relieving radii have also been added to areas of the body, trunnion and pushrod seat insert. Even the included locking nuts have been revised to increase surface area to better maintain lash and eliminate wear.

Swindell Claims 24th Annual COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals
11/09/2011 2:25:10 PM
Sprint Car legend Sammy Swindell conquered a field of 100 of the nation's best Sprint Car pilots to claim his second event title in the 24th Annual COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway (Little Rock, Arkansas) on Saturday, October 29th.
Little Rock, AR - Sprint Car legend Sammy Swindell conquered a field of 100 of the nation's best Sprint Car pilots to claim his second event title in the 24th Annual COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway (Little Rock, Arkansas) on Saturday, October 29th.
In Sprint Car racing there are hundreds of special events across the country each year, but there are only a handful of crown jewels. The annual COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock falls on the list of illustrious events that every competitor wants to win. Each year the best Sprint Car drivers in the country and the most avid fans converge on the high-banked, 1/4 mile oval located in central Arkansas. The event is known for its close quarters racing and wild happenings. Even more notable is that the event is typically filled with drama, and the 2011 edition of the crown jewel event was no exception.
Exactly 100 Sprint Cars from sixteen states entered the event on October 26th - 29th, 2011. After a successful practice night on Wednesday evening the racing action was slated to get underway on Thursday, when approximately half of the field was to take to the track for their preliminary programs. Mother Nature proved to be an antagonist on the opening night, however, as intermittent rains became terminal midway through Thursday's program, forcing the balance of the action to be completed the following evening before the commencement of Friday's schedule.
When the action resumed on Friday evening under cool conditions, it was Broken Arrow, Oklahoma's Brady Bacon, who wouldn't let a severely smoking engine, virtue of an oil overflow, slow him down as he raced to the preliminary victory. A hard-charging Shane Stewart finished in second and Travis Rilat came home in third. With their performances the trio locked into Saturday night's 40 lap finale.
With the Thursday program finally completed a little over 24 hours after it initially began, the Friday slate of racing tackled the 1/4 mile oval. A star-studded field that included many of the nation's best went to war in the event. While former event champions and Bartlett, Tennessee residents Jason Sides and Sammy Swindell waged a heated battle for the lead early in the event, it was former World of Outlaws Champion Danny Lasoski who passed both drivers late in the race to claim the preliminary win. Sides and Swindell followed him across the line to lock into Saturday night's main event.
With the preliminary events in the history books, Saturday's program was next on tap. A near-capacity crowd began funneling into the facility early Saturday morning, and by 6:00 p.m. that night spectators were parking as far away as a mile down the road as I-30 Speedway was bursting at the seams with racers and fans. The massive crowd would not leave disappointed.
By 7:30 p.m. hot laps were underway, and prior to the racing action several presentations were made to various drivers. The most touching involved a former racer, Josh Howard, who hails from Byhalia, Mississippi. Howard was paralyzed from the waist down in a freak accident during the race's 2007 edition. Over the past few years he has fought hard on his road to recovery, and while he still isn't able to walk, he has surpassed the expectations of many of his doctors. The 2011 running of the event marked his first time back at the COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals, and he was there to present the Josh Howard Determination Award, which is a special award presented each year to the driver who demonstrates the most drive and determination to overcome adversity. The award for 2011 was presented to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma's Wayne Johnson, who, despite doctor's predictions, returned to racing late last year after almost having his right foot completely severed in a racing accident. It was an emotional moment as the entire crowd gave the pair a standing ovation, and many of the fans came to give Howard their well-wishes.
With the event's opening ceremonies in the rearview mirror, racing finally began. The field was distributed into a series of alphabet races, whose lineups were determined by driver's performances on their qualifying nights. The preliminary events started with a pair of E-Mains and concluded with a pair of B-Mains. By the time the B-Mains were completed, a field of 21 cars had been assembled for the coveted $15,000-to-win and $2,400-to-start feature. Via a dash held earlier in the night for the top six cars that had locked into the feature on their qualifying nights, it was Danny Lasoski and Shane Stewart who sat on the front row for the 40 lap finale.
As the race went green Stewart jumped to the lead, with Lasoski, Bacon and the fourth-starting Swindell in tow. Swindell quickly worked his way to the second position and stalked early leader Shane Stewart until lap 13, when he raced past Stewart for the top spot exiting turn four. Once out front Swindell methodically began to motor away from the field as Bacon moved past Stewart for second. By lap 25 Swindell had a straightaway lead, and looked to be on his way to a comfortable win before the caution flew on lap 28 for a spun car. During the caution Swindell's right front went flat. Swindell is one of the most polarizing drivers in the sport; fans either love him or hate him with no middle ground, and when it was announced that his tire had gone flat, many of his naysayers came to their feet cheering thinking that his bid at a second title was gone. However, the determined Swindell would be far from done.
When the field lined up for the restart Swindell had a four car cushion between himself and second place runner Brady Bacon, as four lapped cars were placed in between the duo. When the green flag flew for the final time Swindell would do his best to drive his injured mount away from the field as Bacon needed four laps to clear the lapped cars. Once he cleared the traffic he had open track between himself and Swindell, but it wouldn't matter as even with the flat tire Swindell inched away from the field to claim the $15,000 payday, marking his second COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals title and first since 1990. He was followed across the line by Bacon, Stewart, Lasoski and Sides.
In victory lane a confident Swindell commented in front of a crowd full of mixed emotions.
"The last few years all I needed to do was finish and I'd win, but things broke or different things have happened like a tire going flat or whatever," Swindell explained after his ninth career COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals feature start. "We had a flat tonight, but it didn't slow us down, with three wheels it was still better than anybody else. Those guys better go back to work."
Swindell's victory lane comments saw the crowd reply with many boos, while a handful of Swindell supporters gloated in the moment. Whether or not race fans were pleased with the result, one thing was for sure, another COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals had entertained the masses and produced just enough drama to tide race fans over during the off-season. In total a massive purse that boasted over $116,000 was paid out over the course of the weekend's festivities.

24th Annual COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals Rapidly Approaching
11/09/2011 11:34:55 AM
With the rapid approach of the 24th Annual COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway (Little Rock, Arkansas) on October 26h-29th, 2011, COMP Cams® is looking forward to its second year of being the title sponsor of the coveted event.
Memphis, TN − With the rapid approach of the 24th Annual COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway (Little Rock, Arkansas) on October 26h-29th, 2011, COMP Cams® is looking forward to its second year of being the title sponsor of the coveted event.
In 2010 COMP Cams® saw an opportunity to increase its support of one of the nation's top dirt track events, and as a result the company made the transition from an associate sponsor to the title sponsor of the annual COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Arkansas. The event proved to be such a success for all parties involved that the decision was made to extend the sponsorship for the 2011 season.
The 24th Annual COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals features four nights of Sprint Car action at the high-banked, red clay ¼ mile on October 26th-29th, 2011. Wednesday's opening night serves as an open practice, with the Thursday and Friday night portions of the show seeing the field divided in half for preliminaries. For the 2011 season, however, the Saturday night portion of the program features an all new format. In years past the field from both qualifying nights was combined for the finale, which meant another complete show of more than 20 qualifying races was held. With over 120 Sprint Cars in attendance in 2010, the track took a beating and did not produce the quality of racing that the staff at I-30 Speedway expects to provide to its competitors and fans. As a result, instead of a fresh program of racing action on Saturday, in 2011 the there will be a series of alphabet races, including F-Mains, D-Mains, C-Mains, B-Mains, and the 40 lap finale. The various race lineups will be determined by the performances of drivers on their respective qualifying nights. The intent of the program is to put fewer laps on the track and present a greater opportunity for the best possible track conditions for the main event, which posts a $15,000 winner's check and $2,400 just to start for the twenty car grid. The total purse for 2011 is well in excess of $110,000, which makes it the richest 360 cubic inch Sprint Car event in the nation. The event is also sanctioned by the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series.
The combination of the timing of this event and the purse that is posted results in arguably the most eclectic and talented field of Sprint Cars assembled in the country each year. The event has grown to attract over 100 Sprint Cars. In fact, in 2010, while many events struggled to draw cars, this race drew its biggest car count ever as 125 entries from 22 states and Australia took part. The event's past champions list is a who's who of Sprint Car racing with names that include defending champion Brad Sweet, Tony Bruce Jr., Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, Paul McMahan, Jason Johnson, Tim Crawley and several others. In the first 23 editions of the event, 16 different drivers have claimed wins. Gary Wright of Hooks, Texas, owns the most titles with four.
COMP Cams® became involved with the event in 2008, when it began sponsoring an incentive for drivers who were starting on the front row for the finale, with the option to start deep in the field for bonus money. "We at COMP Cams® were extremely excited and honored to be able to become the title sponsor for the COMP Cams® Short Track Nationals in 2010," says COMP Cams® VP of Marketing, Chris Douglas. "We were more than pleased with the outcome of our sponsorship last year, and it was a no-brainer to renew the sponsorship for 2011. Not only is this race an event, but it is also a happening, and it offers so much to racers and fans. It's the epitome of what racing in this country is all about. We look forward to a long relationship, and hope to help the event grow even more as we move forward."

COMP Cams® powered race cars set for the 2011 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Memphis, TN – COMP Cams® powered race cars set for the 2011 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
A revised points system that places an emphasis on winning has led to one of the most wide open Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup fields in the eight year history of the format. After reseeding by season wins to-date, Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick lead the 12 driver field with four victories each. Meanwhile, four-time champ Jeff Gordon rides a wave of momentum, having just moved into third place on the all-time Sprint Cup win list by virtue of collecting his 85th career victory and third of the year at Atlanta Motor Speedway. In turn, Brad Keselowski is perhaps the hottest driver on the circuit, having raced his way into 11th place in the point standings. Keselowksi has picked up three wins in 2011, as well as completed a four-race stretch in August where he finished no worse than 3rd. All eyes though, remain on five-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson, who looks to possibly make even more history this season. Rounding out the field are Carl Edwards, Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth, Ryan Newman, Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Denny Hamlin, who all hope to peak at just the right time to take home the season ending money and hardware. The ten-race Chase kicks off at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday, September 18th and culminates at Homestead-Miami Speedway in mid-November.
In 2011, COMP Cams® continues its long-standing relationship as the official cam company of NASCAR. With competitors prominently displaying the company’s decal on their front fenders, COMP Cams® has become synonymous with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and is an official Automotive Performance Partner of NASCAR-sanctioned racing at all levels throughout North America.

COMP Cams® Quick Tech Video: How To Set Valve Lash
Memphis, TN − The latest Quick Tech Video from COMP Cams ® helps engine builders maximize valve train performance by properly setting valve lash.
The COMP Cams ® Quick Tech Video series helps racers, engine builders and automotive enthusiasts at all levels discover secrets to maximizing power potential. Properly setting valve lash is crucial to achieving maximum valve lift, stability, durability and performance. Too much lash will cause noise and wear in the valve train, while lashing too tightly may hang open a valve so the cylinder can’t run. This latest video installment, How To Set Valve Lash, walks viewers through the process of setting valve lash to either give an engine more bottom end torque or more top end horsepower. The How To Set Valve Lash and all other COMP Cams ® Quick Tech Videos can be on the COMP Cams ® YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/compcams.

Jimmy Owens Conquers The World for The Second Time
09/16/2011 4:33:50 PM
Jimmy Owens survives damage and a late race charge by Eddie Carrier Jr. to capture his second World 100 globe trophy.
Rossburg, OH – Jimmy Owens survives damage and a late race charge by Eddie Carrier Jr. to capture his second World 100 globe trophy.
Ask any Dirt Late Model driver what race they want to win more than any other, and you’ll get the same answer every time. The World 100. Each year on the second weekend of September, the best Dirt Late Model pilots in the world converge on the famed 1/2 mile clay oval at Eldora Speedway (Rossburg, Ohio) for the annual World 100. While there are races that pay more money in the Dirt Late Model world, there is no race that has more prestige. More than one driver has been quoted as saying that they would still come to the race even if it paid nothing, because they want the coveted "globe trophy" more than anything.
The 2011 edition of the event was held on September 9th-10th, and 112 Dirt Late Model drivers representing seventeen states, three countries and two continents entered the 41st Annual World 100. The event began inauspiciously, as Mother Nature intervened on the scheduled technical inspection day, slated for Thursday. The persistent showers subsided on Friday morning, allowing the haulers to fill the infield at the half-mile monster. By 7:00 p.m. on Friday technical inspection was complete and hot laps were underway. In hot laps it was Batesville, Arkansas' driver, Jared Landers, who is the current track record holder, who led the way with the fastest lap times around the high-banked oval.
With hot laps completed qualifications commenced, which are conducted differently at the World 100 than at any other major Dirt Late Model event. Instead of just drawing one qualifying number, drivers draw two numbered pills at registration, and receive the opportunity to qualify in two separate rounds of one-lap qualifying, with their best lap between the two rounds being used to determine their heat race lineups for Saturday night. Another hitch is thrown at the competitors each year with an inversion wheel being spun by the fast qualifier to determine the number of cars that will be inverted for Saturday night's heat races. The wheel presents the chance to see zero, two, three, four, five or even six cars inverted for heat race action, and more times than not the inversion wheel is regarded with dismay by the fast qualifier, who knows that the outcome of a simple spin of the wheel could ultimately determine his or her chances of winning the event.
Three-time World 100 Champion, Scott Bloomquist from Mooresburg, Tennessee, blazed to the fastest qualifying lap on Friday night with a lap of 15.009 seconds (less than two tenths shy of the track record). On the spin of the wheel he received a "3," which meant that the top three cars in each heat race would be inverted. With the spin of the inversion wheel completed, Friday night's event came to an end as competitors and fans began to look ahead to Saturday night's festivities.
Racing in general is known for the excitement and enthusiasm that it generates, but perhaps the most electric part of the Dirt Late Model World comes to life between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night each year at the World 100. It's during this time that pre-race festivities get underway and the first heat races are called to the grid as a massive crowd of more than 30,000 fans waits anxiously. On this night the anxious fans would not be disappointed as a full throng of six heat races were held, which were overflowing with intense racing action, drama, insane wrecks and overall incredible racing. Via the slate of six heat races and two consolation events, a talent-laden field of thirty competitors was assembled for the 100 lap finale.
South Carolina's Chris Madden and 2005 event champion Dale McDowell from Georgia brought the field to the green flag for the $44,000-to-win race. As the race went green it was Madden who jumped to the lead in pursuit of his first triumph in the coveted event. McDowell, Darrell Lanigan, Jimmy Owens and Billy Moyer pursued the leader during the early stages of the event.
As the race approached the lap 10 mark Madden maintained the lead, but former event champion and current Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series points leader Jimmy Owens was on the move, and Owens used lapped traffic to his advantage to claim the lead on lap 13. Once out front, Owens would power his #20 Bloomquist/Cornett Racing Engine Super Late Model to a commanding advantage over the pack.
After enduring a series of cautions Owens continually motored away from the pack on the restarts, but that all changed as the event's final caution flew on lap 82 for a Dale McDowell and Josh Richards tangle in turn four. At the time of the caution Owens was followed by Lanigan and O'Neal. The ensuing restart saw Owens initially return to his customary lead in the event. One lap after returning to green flag conditions, however, he jumped the cushion in turn one causing the right-side door brace to break. In turn this allowed the door panel to buckle, resulting in a very ill-handling mount due to poor aerodynamics. At times Owens was as much as a second slower than his pursuers and looked to be a sitting duck in the closing laps.
Despite Owens' woes, the battle for the second position presented the would-be contenders with their own issues as O'Neal and Lanigan began an intense battle that was full of questionable slide jobs and heavy contact. This allowed Owens to narrowly extend his lead, but he would not be in the clear yet, as fourth-running Eddie Carrier Jr., took advantage of the full-contact battle for the second spot to shoot past the duo on lap 98 and set his sights on the leader. Carrier Jr. was a full straightaway behind Owens as the pair took the white flag, but he quickly closed on the leader's wounded car down the back straightaway. Heading into turn three on the final lap Owens headed to the cushion, while Carrier Jr. made a banzai move to the bottom of the track. He desperately tried to slide in front of Owens exiting turn four, but his bid fell just short as he crossed the finish line in the second position in front of a cheering crowd. O'Neal, Lanigan, and fourteenth starting John Blankenship rounded out the top five at the finish line.
The win was the second World 100 title for Jimmy Owens, who has been competing in the Dirt Late Model division for less than ten years.
“Tonight was a whole lot more sentimental than the first [World 100 win],” said Owens in victory lane, who ended a string of 10 consecutive first-time World 100 winners. “The first time we won we were still more of a Modified racer and when we won the Dream it just didn’t hit home to what we had done."
COMP Cams ® had a dominant presence at the 41 st Annual World 100, as all of the drivers who finished in the top five were utilizing power plants with COMP Cams ® camshafts. Cornett Racing Engines led the way with an impressive three of the top five finishers, including race winner Jimmy Owens, Darrell Lanigan, and John Blankenship. All three employed the use of COMP Cams ® products. West Virginia-based Grover Racing Engines powered Eddie Carrier Jr. to a second place finish, while a Jay Dickens Racing Engine was present in the car of third place finisher, Don O'Neal. COMP Cams ® is the leader in valve train technology and performance, further evidenced by its products dominating the biggest Dirt Late Model event of the year. Richie Gustin collected $5,700 for his victory in the crown jewel of IMCA Modified racing.
Memphis, TN – Richie Gustin collected $5,700 for his victory in the crown jewel of IMCA Modified racing.
The Gustin family name is synonymous with Dirt Modifieds. On Saturday, September 10th, they added to their legacy, as Richie Gustin collected the A-Main victory in the 29th annual IMCA Super Nationals at Boone Speedway in Boone, IA, in front of a standing room only crowd. The win came on the heels of his brother Jimmy’s triumph in the 2010 running of the event. This year’s edition of the yearly six day contest attracted 241 IMCA Modifieds from 24 states and Canada, each of which were vying for a position in Saturday’s culminating 33 car starting grid. Gustin of Gilman, IA, took a qualifying feature win on Wednesday, earning him the pole for Saturday’s main event. He then led every circuit of the 40-lap feature en route to a $5,700 payday. Gustin jumped to the lead early from the traditional three-wide start, and held off a variety of competitors on restarts before motoring away from the field just as he had in preliminary events throughout the week.

COMP Cams® Powers Donny Schatz To Knoxville Nationals Win
09/07/2011 7:34:33 AM
Memphis, TN – Donny Schatz won his fifth Knoxville Nationals using a Shaver Engine powered by COMP Cams®.
Donny Schatz is certainly no stranger to victory lane at Knoxville Raceway. The three-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car champion from Minot, ND, has hundreds of A-Main victories under his belt, and had already won the prestigious Knoxville Nationals four times prior to his triumph on Saturday night, August 13th. His fifth victory in the event, though, may have been the hardest to come by at the tough half-mile speedway that is known for requiring big horsepower and nerves of steel in the driver’s seat. A rod through the oil pan of his Tony Stewart Racing entry’s 410 c.i. primary engine during Wednesday’s preliminary action forced Schatz’s team to go to a Ron Shaver back-up engine for the remainder of the week. However, Schatz had garnered enough points before the engine failure to be locked into Saturday’s main event, where he gridded in the 13th position. The replacement engine took Schatz to the front of the field and a $150,000 payday in the 50-lap race.
“The Knoxville Nationals is the biggest sprint car race in the country, and to win it is a big deal,” said Ron Shaver of Shaver Racing Engines, the Torrance, CA, based company responsible for Schatz’s powerplants. “Despite the failure with the primary engine, the back-up performed flawlessly and delivered plenty of horsepower. We place our reputation on the line each time an engine leaves the shop, and COMP® valve train parts are an important part of our winning combination.”

COMP Cams® Engine Builder Championship on LOLMDS A Tight One
09/06/2011 4:24:56 PM
With the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series recently surpassing the midpoint of the 2011 season, the battle for the series' COMP Cams® Engine Builder of the Year competition provides all indications that it will be a fight to the final event.
Memphis, TN − With the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series recently surpassing the midpoint of the 2011 season, the battle for the series' COMP Cams® Engine Builder of the Year competition provides all indications that it will be a fight to the final event.
Over the past few years the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) has grown to be arguably the most potent national tour in the Dirt Late Model world. It's no big surprise then that just about every major contender in the Dirt Late Model engine builder world has a presence on the tour, and the closeness of the current COMP Cams ® Engine Builder of the Year standings reflects the parity among the top horsepower producers. With a grueling slate of dates that includes more than 40 events across the country, the LOLMDS is a true challenge for even the most seasoned veteran. And with tracks ranging from 1/4 mile bullrings to 1/2 mile motor eaters, the durability of engines are equally tested on a nightly basis.
The LOLMDS recently surpassed the midpoint of the 2011 season, and right now it is Somerset, Kentucky, builder Cornett Racing Engines that resides atop the point standings in the COMP Cams ® Engine Builder of the Year standings. Cornett's leading pilot is Jimmy Owens from Newport, Tennessee, who has used four wins and several top five finishes to position not only Cornett Racing Engines atop the standings, but also himself as the current drivers’ points leader. Owens has been a model of consistency in 2011, and it's reflected by his position in the standings in his #20 Bloomquist/Cornett Ford Thunder Super Late Model. Along with Owens in the Cornett Racing Engines camp is Brad Neat, who resides in the top ten in the tour standings and has won a single LOLMDS event in 2011 in his #41 Longhorn/Cornett Lightning Super Late Model. Another Cornett Racing driver, John Blankenship, recently won a series event at Hagerstown Speedway in his #23 Rocket/Cornett-powered entry.
Just ten points behind the leading engine builder in the competition is Roush Yates Racing Engines. While the company has just one regular driver competing on the tour, it has its stock in a strong candidate as two-time defending tour champion, Scott Bloomquist from Mooresburg, Tennessee, utilizes Roush Yates products. Alternating between Ford and Chevrolet power plants from Roush Yates Racing Engines, Bloomquist is currently second in the series standings on the heels of a tour best nine wins, several top five finishes, and an array of fast time awards.
Twenty-two points removed from the top spot is Aberdeen, Mississippi-based Jay Dickens Racing Engines, which has made a resurgence in 2011 after a brief merger with Roush Yates Racing Engines in 2010. With two regulars on the tour, Don O'Neal and Bub McCool, the engine builder has seen his clients record several strong runs as O'Neal has recorded one win and currently holds down the third position in the standings. Bub McCool has flirted with victory on the tour on several occasions and is currently tenth in the latest standings and second in the Quarter Master ® Rookie of the Year battle.
Fourth place in the current COMP Cams ® Engine Builder of the Year competition is Sullivan, Wisconsin-based Pro Power Racing Engines. Quarter Master ® Rookie of the Year contender Frankie Heckanast Jr. has helped keep the engine builder in the top five. Invading driver Tim McCreadie also recently raced his Pro Power entry
to a feature win during a New York swing, while fellow outsider Brian Birkhofer positioned his #15b Pro Power Racing Engines entry in victory lane at Tri-City Speedway in July.
Rounding out the top five in the current competition is North Carolina-based Earnhardt Childress Racing Engines. With Clint Bowyer Motorsports teammates Dale McDowell and Jared Landers running power plants from the company, the engine builder has visited victory lane once in 2011 with Landers. The engine provider has also powered Landers to the lead in the latest Quarter Master ® Rookie of the Year standings.
Other engine builders earning points in the COMP Cams ® Engine Builder of the Year competition thus far in 2011 include Race Engine Design (RED), Gaerte Race Engines, Vic Hill Racing Engines and Rhyne Competition Engines.
In addition to its support and sponsorship of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, COMP Cams ® also has direct involvement with nearly every engine company represented in this contest via products and technical support. These top-notch engine builders and COMP Cams ® share a common goal to provide the best product possible, while putting their clients in victory lane. COMP Cams® Topless 100 Coming Up in August
07/19/2011 8:32:11 AM
The 19th Annual COMP Cams® Topless 100 at Batesville Motor Speedway is rapidly approaching as the South prepares for its only true crown jewel event.
Memphis, TN − As the summer heat begins to reign supreme throughout the South, racers and fans know that it means the 19th Annual COMP Cams® Topless 100 is just around the corner. The mega-event is scheduled for August 18th-20th, 2011, at the picturesque Batesville Motor Speedway (Locust Grove, Arkansas).
While many other areas of the country play host to "crown jewel" events each year, the Topless 100 is arguably the South’s only true elite event. While many insiders in the sport argue what does and doesn't qualify an event as a crown jewel, most agree that there are few events in the South that meet the criteria for the status. The Topless 100, however, definitely makes the cut. For the past eighteen years, the event, which was the brainchild of Batesville Motor Speedway general manager and promoter Mooney Starr, has been the biggest paying Dirt Late Model event in the South. With the big paydays each year come incredibly talented fields of cars at the 3/8 mile oval track, and over the years there have been some truly memorable moments.
The $40,000 first place check for the 100 lap event is no doubt a tasty incentive for any driver, but the prestige that goes with a COMP Cams® Topless 100 title is equally appetizing for drivers from the region.
Batesville, Arkansas driver Billy Moyer, Jr., has been part of several COMP Cams® Topless 100 victory celebrations before, but they have come with his dad, the legendary Billy Moyer, in victory lane.
"I've been to victory lane with Dad four times now over the years, and that's really cool," comments Moyer, Jr. "However, I want to know what it feels like to be the one lifting that trophy over my head at this event. I grew up going to this race, and dreaming of racing in it one day and winning it. The best drivers in the country are right here in my backyard that weekend, and it's my chance to be the best. I probably want that win more than any other. We just don't have many races of that magnitude in this area."
A fellow Batesville native got to do the unthinkable at the event in 2010, as Jared Landers killed two birds with one stone by getting his first Dirt Late Model win and his COMP Cams® Topless 100 victory at the same time.
"It was all so unbelievable. I grew up in Batesville so obviously I've been going to that track my whole life, and I've seen every COMP Cams® Topless 100,” states the 29-year-old Landers. “As a kid you dream of winning that race, but it just seems so impossible. To win that race last year, which was also my first Super Late Model win, was unreal. Everybody asked me when it finally hit me that I had won the Topless 100, and to be honest it was probably that next week, while I was looking at the trophy in my shop. It still seems so unreal."
